Service Description

English Woollen Longdraw Spinning Workshop For centuries, English spinners used the longdraw technique to create the soft, warm yarns that clothed a nation. Built on rhythm, airflow, and trust in the fibre, longdraw has a quiet magic: once it clicks, it can completely transform the way you spin. Join me at The Spinning Barn for a small, hands-on workshop exploring English Woollen Longdraw on your usual treadle spinning wheel. This isn’t just a lesson in technique—it’s an invitation to connect with a centuries-old tradition, understand its principles, and see how it still fits perfectly into modern spinning. What you’ll learn and experience: Why longdraw produces beautifully light, warm, and airy yarn How to prepare rolags and select the best fibres for this method Techniques to spin consistent, balanced yarn without fighting your fibre The history behind the method, connecting you to generations of English spinners How this technique fits beautifully with modern projects—and for those working towards the AGWSD Foundation Certificate, guidance on what’s being assessed What to expect: Guided, step-by-step support tailored to your experience Plenty of time to practise and find your rhythm At least one skein of your own yarn to take home Insight, encouragement, and troubleshooting to help the technique feel intuitive and deeply satisfying All equipment and fibre are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own spinning wheel in good working order. ✨ Bonus: Pair this workshop with our Worsted Hand Spinning Workshop to explore the two definitive spinning methods and elevate your skills further. Refreshments are included—home-made cakes, biscuits, fresh fruit, and drinks—please bring your own packed lunch. Spaces are limited, so whether you’re exploring longdraw for the first time or refining your technique, this is the perfect opportunity to learn in a relaxed, supportive, and historically immersive setting.
