Reconnecting With Our Spinning: A Change of Scenery for Joy, Calm, and Creativity

Hello everyone

Life at The Spinning Barn has been really hectic recently (which is fabulous of course) and I seem to have a lot of deadlines to meet so I really felt like I needed to slow down for a couple of hours and take a bit of time to spin for the sheer joy of it.

I decided to take my wheel outside into the garden where I could enjoy the glorious weather, the birdsong and the mass of beautiful blooms in the garden. And it really helped. It felt as if I was somewhere so different even though it was just outside of the barn and I felt so much more relaxed and reconnected with my spinning.

So I decided to share this in my latest Sunday Spinspiration on my social feeds and it lead on to this blog because I felt that if it made me feel better it may just help you too. I hope you enjoy this little read and that it makes just a tiny bit of difference to your day too.

A change of scenery can work wonders. Spinning outside today—fresh air, calm mind, happy hands.

It is easy, sometimes, to let our spinning slip into the background of busy lives. Projects wait quietly in baskets, wheels gather dust, and our fibre sits patiently, ready for our hands but lost in the noise of everything else.

But the beauty of hand spinning is that it’s always there, ready to welcome us back.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to reconnect with our spinning is to change our surroundings. Whether it’s stepping outside into the garden, spinning on the patio, or packing up a spindle for the park, a fresh view can breathe new life into your spinning practice.

Spinning outdoors offers so much more than a change of scenery. The fresh air, natural light, and soothing sounds of nature can shift our mindset from "must finish this" to "I get to do this." The result? We spin with more ease, enjoyment, and often, surprising bursts of creativity.

The rhythm of the wheel or the gentle twist of a spindle becomes a meditation when accompanied by birdsong or the rustle of leaves. It slows our thoughts, softens tension, and helps us re-engage with spinning not as a task but as a pleasure.

I'm sure that most of us have a designated spinning area, be that your craft studio or a corner of the living room bu you might be surprised at how productive spinning can feel when you're not in your usual location. A different environment can spark new ideas: perhaps you’ll try a fibre you haven’t touched in months, experiment with a new drafting method, or simply fall back in love with a favourite blend.

When spinning is fun again, it flows. When we're relaxed, we make better yarn. And when we’re inspired, the creative doors swing wide open.

So this is your gentle nudge, take your wheel or your spindle and find a new corner to spin in. Sit beneath a tree, by a sunny window, or on a quiet bench in your local park. You don’t need hours—just a few moments can be enough to feel the shift.

Let spinning become a space of restoration, not obligation. Let it nourish you.

And if you do venture out, I’d love to see your view. Tag me or send a photo—I’m always inspired by the places spinning can take us.

Happy Spinning Everyone

Theresa
