Autumn signals the start of cosy evenings spent spinning

Welcome Fellow Wool Whisperers

I don't know about you but while the weather was so hot and uncomfortable I found it difficult to spin, often waiting until the cooler evenings or just not spinning at all. Well now that we are finally in autumn the time feels perfect to return to our spinning wheels and work on some projects to see us through the darker nights ahead. That's one bonus of a change in the seasons along with log fires and hot chocolate!

So perhaps it is time to think about looking after our spinning wheels and checking that they are in perfect working order to relax us as we rhythmically create stunning yarns for beautiful projects. So let's take a little look at what we should be considering to keep our wheels in tip top condition and give it the attention it deserves to keep it smooth for years to come.

1. Ensuring Smooth Operation

A well-maintained spinning wheel operates smoothly, making your spinning experience more enjoyable. Over time, dust, fibre debris, and general wear can affect the wheel’s performance. Regular cleaning and lubrication of moving parts, such as the bearings, flyer, and treadle, ensure that the wheel spins effortlessly. This reduces unnecessary strain on both the machine and the spinner, allowing for a more consistent yarn. This rule also applies to our electric spinners which can also accumulate dust, debris and fluffy bits in all the wrong places.

Tip: Use a soft cloth to wipe down your wheel regularly and apply spinning wheel oil to the moving parts as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Preserving the Wheel’s Longevity

A spinning wheel is an investment, and like any tool, it requires care to last. Neglecting maintenance can lead to wear and tear that might cause parts to break or malfunction. By keeping an eye on the condition of your wheel and addressing any issues promptly, you can prevent minor problems from turning into costly repairs. If you have ever attended one of my social groups you will know too well that I always reach for the oil bottle whenever I hear a squeak!

Tip: Inspect your wheel regularly for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the wood, loose screws, or worn drive bands. Replacing or repairing these components early can prevent further damage. Don't wait until you absolutely have to make repairs, be proactive and prevent the problems before they appear. There is nothing worse than a drive band or brake band failing mid spin.

3. Improving Yarn Quality

The quality of your yarn is directly linked to the condition of your spinning wheel. A wheel that is free from obstructions will produce more consistent yarn. If your wheel is sticky, unbalanced, or not operating smoothly, you may notice uneven tension, which can result in yarn that is either too loose or too tight. Regular maintenance helps maintain the balance and alignment of your wheel, leading to better control over your spinning and, ultimately, higher quality yarn.

Tip: If you’re noticing inconsistencies in your yarn, check the tension and balance of your wheel. Adjusting these settings might be necessary to restore even spinning. There are lots of other reasons why you may experience inconsistencies in your yarn but I shall cover those in another future post.

4. Enhancing the Spinning Experience

Spinning is not just a craft; it’s a meditative and creative process. A poorly maintained spinning wheel can disrupt this experience, causing frustration and interrupting your flow. On the other hand, a well-maintained wheel operates quietly and efficiently, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the spinning process.

Tip: Keep your spinning area clean and organised. A clutter-free environment with a well-maintained wheel will help you focus on the rhythm of spinning, making the experience more enjoyable. Having a dedicated space for your wheel will also enable and encourage you to spin regularly which will of course improve your skills and learning. Remember my rule, spin for 20 minutes a day for a week and watch your progress skyrocket!

5. Preserving Historical and Sentimental Value

Many spinners use antique or heirloom spinning wheels, which often carry significant historical or sentimental value. Many of you will know about my spinning wheel collection and even though I use them rarely I still take time to maintain them as I believe they really do deserve some care and attention. If only those wheels could talk. Proper maintenance is crucial to preserving these cherished tools for future generations and I know that my granddaughters have their eyes on a couple of mine! By taking care of your wheel, you honour its history and ensure that it can continue to be used and appreciated for years to come.

Maintaining your spinning wheel is not just about keeping it functional, it’s about enhancing your spinning experience, producing high-quality yarn, and preserving a valuable tool. Regular maintenance is a small investment of time and effort that pays off in the long run, ensuring that your spinning wheel remains a reliable and cherished companion in your fibre journey.

So, the next time you sit down to spin, take a moment to appreciate your wheel and give it the care it deserves. A well-maintained spinning wheel will reward you with years of smooth, joyful spinning.

I hope these few points have motivated you to give your wheel a bit a tlc. Of course if you require replacement or spare drive bands, brake bands and spinning wheel oil you can find these all in my online shop. I shall look forward to packaging them for you

Happy, and smooth spinning!

Theresa
